Anyone have a thought about rebuilding a 77 johnson 115 hp 4 cyl.
That is, parts availability, and is this an easy motor to work on?
I am handy, have tools and time, and a manual. Never done an outboard motor before. Rebuilt lots of truck related stuff as a hobby in the past.
Does this motor use a lot of gas?
Its on an old fiberglass boat I bought, used in salt water, but does not look too corroded from the outside. Thanks Retired old geezer

Re: 77 johnson 115 part availability

The 1977 is the last in the line of 115 V4 motors from 1973-1977.

In 1978 the 115 changes gearcase, ignition system, exhaust, water pump, flywheel, tilt & trim, transom mount, shift rod, etc. You name it, it probably changed in 1978.

I keep a 135 and 115 running from that series and most parts are either available from my local dealer or from sea-way .com in Seattle, WA.

It is fairly cheap & easy to find a parts motor, and I would highly recommend that. The Factory Service Manual for 1976 or 1977, either Johnson or Evinrude will be necessary. There is almost always a used one on Ebay.

For example, Check Ebay now, search for 160199758747 or 260203497839.

Wide open and under load, expect the motor to use around 10-11 gallons per hour, half that at cruising speed. There is little relief from that fuel consumption in newer motors, despite the hype.

The parts manual is on-line at the BRP site, you may want to take the time to download it.

Thanks

Gives me something to ponder. Might put the motor on Ebay for sale, so someone else can use it. Old geezer
