77 Johnson 115, Water pump replacement - inlet tubes

I have been in the process of replacing the water pump on a 77 115. I have the dual tube type. I have the guide tubes, but I tried fitting the small top pump plate into the middle section and it does not look like the copper tubes are long enough to go past the plate into the seals. Does this sound right. It is impossible to tell after the lower unit is replaced. How hard is it to remove/replace the tubes?

You should measure the parts.-----And possibly the tubes were buckled in previous work.----Are you having overheat issues ?

I am having trouble seating the water pump. I have started with muffs since replacing and water comes out the joint of the lower unit and middle section. I assume the water is coming out the tube/pump joint. I replaced because the tell tale stopped peeing, and I took apart to inspect and replace (motor/boat is new to me). I tested the top water pump plate to learn how the Johns goes together. (previous boat had a Merc.)

Make sure the tell tale hose and fitting are clear.----Lots of water leaks when a motor runs on a hose.

They are clear, I will test run the motor today to see if is working. If I have to remove the tubes, do I have to pull the powerhead?

I think you do have to pull the powerhead on the twin tube exhaust housing in order to replace tubes.-------They are quite reliable.-----I have never had to do that yet.------Make 100% sure tubes are the correct length.----Changing them would be a lot of work to find out -----" still the same result " ---as we often see reported on some guess work.

Running on muffs is not a good test of the water pump. Can you find a large barrel to test (like a plastic trash can)? Water has to be well above the pump.

Just noticed you referred to two inlet tubes. I think one of the tubes (don't know which) is an inlet tube from the pump, and the second is a recirculation tube back down. Water then gets pushed back up to the powerhead.
