History: motor starts great after carb and fuel pump rebuild (rough idle), runs great from idle to WOT. Stop in middle of lake, won't ever start and have to be towed.
Upon an inspection at home, discover that the stator has melted and dripped, replace stator and still no start. Perform ohm tests on ignition parts and all check out.
My battery was fully charged and appeared to be cranking my engine over enough to start it - I was wrong! A closer inspection of the starter revealed that the drive assembly had come lose inside and wasn't a solid piece which was allowing the starter to slip while cranking the flywheel. Replaced the drive assembly (pinion gear). Not really expecting the motor to start I went ahead and hooked the "muffs" up, pumped up the fuel ball, turned the key and engaged the choke, turned it over and wham, it cranks up on the first lick and runs and idles great! I tried it several more times just be sure and never had a problem.
Anyway, in all the posts I've read on the subject of motor won't start, the starter pinion gear was never mentioned as possible cause. The lesson I learned: Starter needs to be cranking the motor over pretty darn fast to generate enough spark to start. I'm off to the lake to make sure it runs under a load.
Long post I know, but I'm so relieved to finally get my motor to start and wanted to relate my experience in case it may help someone else's situation.
Thanks to everyone who helped me through this.
I really love this site!!!
