History: motor starts great after carb and fuel pump rebuild (rough idle), runs great from idle to WOT. Stop in middle of lake, won't ever start and have to be towed.
Upon an inspection at home, discover that the stator has melted and dripped, replace stator and still no start. Perform ohm tests on ignition parts and all check out.
My battery was fully charged and appeared to be cranking my engine over enough to start it - I was wrong! A closer inspection of the starter revealed that the drive assembly had come lose inside and wasn't a solid piece which was allowing the starter to slip while cranking the flywheel. Replaced the drive assembly (pinion gear). Not really expecting the motor to start I went ahead and hooked the "muffs" up, pumped up the fuel ball, turned the key and engaged the choke, turned it over and wham, it cranks up on the first lick and runs and idles great! I tried it several more times just be sure and never had a problem.
Anyway, in all the posts I've read on the subject of motor won't start, the starter pinion gear was never mentioned as possible cause. The lesson I learned: Starter needs to be cranking the motor over pretty darn fast to generate enough spark to start. I'm off to the lake to make sure it runs under a load.
Long post I know, but I'm so relieved to finally get my motor to start and wanted to relate my experience in case it may help someone else's situation.
Thanks to everyone who helped me through this.
I really love this site!!!

Feels better than sex don't it. Had a similar experience (kind of) where I replaced electric choke part.
Previous outing ran like a champ but had to maually choke it. Next trip it fired up fine and electric choke worked but nooo power. Popped the cowling off and found I had knocked a piece of carb linkage from it's clip. What a relief.

Mike

thanks...im having problems with my 71 125hp evinrude with not getting any spark. battery was origally hooked up backwards and all was replaced electrically or in working condition but, still no spark. started to wonder if its spinning enough rpm's to create spark to start. its spinning at 5300rpm's right now and not sure if it should be spinning more or not.

I may be wrong, but all it needs to crank is about 400-500 rpms. How's it spinning at 5300 rpms if it's not running?

Re: '77 Johnson 140 roars back to life!!!

the motor cranks over at 5300 or maybe it is 500 sorry i could be mistaken but, doesnt have any spark to start. i was told with this engine you have to have a good battery with high cranking amps to create spark to start but, dont think that is the problem now im sure she is being supplied by plenty of amps...thanks

I feel for you guy. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why mine was only getting weak spark (you're not getting any spark which sounds like a failed ignition part somewhee) I don't know anything about your motor and according to your other post R Johnson indicates it's a complicated system. Have you checked all your ground wires? That was one of the last things I did - undid all of them I could find, cleaned them up and reattached. Good luck on getting it running.

thanks for the help i did in fact check all the grounds, clean them and reattach. i thought too it a problem in the ignition but, then someone from a marine service dept. told me that ifs atleast cranking over its not in the ignition. who knows maybe hes wrong too. its got to be something stupid going to take it in to be serviced by proffesional i just dont have what i need to run all the tests. thanks again

if it needs to turn over at 500 rpm - how can you do that with a ropestarter?

To: JJS3 Did you check the timing? Points? There are not many things, that can create the "spark" for the motor. Also test the distributor. make sure the shaft is NOT broken.

To: JJS3 also check wires, cables , make sure they are not worn or broken
