'77 Johnson 9.9 Idle Problem

'77 Johnson 9.9. Engine won't idle. Cleaned Carb and found some gunk - seems to be clean now. Starts easy but still won't idle normally. When I try to idle, sounds like someone hit stop button. Pulling out choke fast and push back in will keep engine running. Looking for possible fixes - clean carb again ?, possible fuel pump or fuel line ?(removed fuel line, manually turned over and seems to squirt ok), vaccum leak somewhere? new plastic fuel tank and hose - perhaps leaking? Have manual ordered but looking for tips from you experts ... thanks

Sounds like it's still the carb.Did you install a kit,or just clean ?<br /><br />I suggest the kit,and remove /replace the core plug over the idle pocket,so the idle passages get real clean.<br /><br />DHP

Be sure to adjust the float properly too.

Just cleaned the carb.. I have new carb kit but awaiting for the '77 Johnson manual to arrive. Replacing the core plug sounds like a good idea ... need manual before I attempt anything furthur than general cleaning ... don't want to wind up with a "box-o-parts" ... Float seems to be properly adjusted as per Seloc manual ... OMC manual shoudl arrive today. If you follow this post, will keep it updated. thanks for all suggesstions

Certainly no expert on these matters, BUT I just went through something similar on my motor. In addition to pulling the plug out and cleaning the ports, make sure the jet (don't know if it's a main or idle or if they're one in the same) is clean. Mine had three little holes in the side of the jet that were plugged (very small holes) when I cleaned it with air and carb cleaner it didn't get those little holes clear, had to clear them with a stand of copper wire. Wish you luck with it.

When you think it is real clean blow out all passages with high pressure compressed air - no rattle cans.
