I have a 1977 OMC setup that includes a Ford 302 and the electric shift outdrive. I bought the boat a year ago and knew nothing about OMC's. I found a boat that runs great but has many small issues, one of which is the engine jumps a couple inches when I hit the throttle. I thought that the engine mounts were shot, but when trying to remove them last weekend to rebuild I noticed there were hydraulic lines attached to them. I looked through my manual and the mounts are lifts for the engine to control the trim. This system is called Selectrim, and it doesn't appear to be working.

To get started I attached a new toggle switch to the system. Once wired I check the level of the fluid in the hydraulic motor resevoir...which was full. I tried fliping the switch to run the motor but it clicks, and nothing happens. Click, click, click. I thought it might be a problem with the solenoids that connect the switch to the motor so I direct wired the motor off the battery, but nothing happens. No noise, nothing. I found that the clicking definately comes from the solenoids, but they both appear to be reacting exactly the same which leads me to believe their alright.

The motor itself appears to be dead. If I direct wire it I should see some movement or hear some noise if it was working at all, right? The only things I can think of at this point is there's either a grouding problem, or the motor is toast. I think it's grounded to the engine...does that sound correct?

Does anyone know about these? I heard they don't normally go out, but this one appears to be dead. Any ideas?? Maybe I can replace the brushes? Obviously, I'm not familiar with hydraulic motors.

Thanks for all your help.

Joe

You are on the right track here... Most of those trim pump motors failed several times during the life of the boat/engine.

JoeAB I too have this setup on a 351 and mine did not work either. I picked up on from e-bay for $76. Have seen one or 2 post where guys got the motors rebuilt. One source for some hard to find used parts is T.C.Electronics, they seem to be straight talkers and tell you outright if a used part has something wrong with it (chipped, broken bolt). Good luck

Ebay had a couple listed. Don't know if they fit your application.

You say the engine jumped?
Those lifters should not "jump". Mine do not.
I wonder if they are dry?

At any rate you have to start with the pump. Yes it is grounded to through the motor block. In my case, I have a second ground wire running to the the mounting/ground bolt on the pump.

You should really have a voltmeter and see that you are getting 12V from the solenoid.

Re: '77 OMC Selectrim Problems

Thanks for the help guys. I'll definately check Ebay for one of these.

As far as the voltmeter, this why I hard wired the motor. Working by myself it was difficult to flip the toggle switch and check the voltage on my multimeter. I'll give it another shot, however, I do believe the solenoids are working correctly.

Regarding the jumping, I would agree that my lines are dry which is why it's happening. I need to get fluid in the lines and I believe the only way to accomplish this is to get the motor started.

I'll keep you posted as I work with it more.

Thanks.

Joe
