I can't seem to get the worm reatiner off. I've tried WD40 and heat, but it won't budge...

Any suggestions?

Next step is to try to find "special tool No.909075"...

Thanks in advance!

You talking about the cap at the end of the tilt gearbox? If so, raise the leg, remove the circlip, and lower the drive from top to bottom, without pause. That should blow the cap off and spit out the worm gear.

Per the manual ...With the drive in the down position, remove the three bolts that hold worm gear cover in place. Gently pull upward on the drive unit and it will push the cap and the worm gear out of the housing. If you try to lower the unit from the up position, and if the cap and worm gear do come out, your drive unit will come crashing down, as the worm gear is all that is holding it up....

Re: 77 OMC Stringer Elect. Shift Worm Gear Removal

Sorry guys....

I'm trying to get the STEERING worm gear retainer out! This drive only has the shaft and no gear as it WAS one of two set up on a boat that had twins. I'm installing my steering worm gear set in it! The steering worm gear retainer screws in and out of the upper gear case, top starbord side.

My apologies for not being more specific!

DOH!
