I have a '77 OMC 140 that the tilt is not working on.Either up or down. I was having intermittant problems last year but it always worked...eventually. The boat sits in the water for 8 months a year. Could I have water in the tilt motor? I have checked thru to the motor. Am getting good voltage thru the selenoids( both of them). The tilt motor does not look easy to remove. Anyone with a suggestion as to the easiest way to remove the tilt motor so I can check it? Once I get it out I should check the whole system for defects...correct? Thanx

You are right, they are knuckle busters to get out.

Your's I believe, has the 2 threaded rods that runs through the motor. Pull it and a visual inspection may give you a clue. Otherwise you'll have to trouble shoot.

Try using our search feature using OMC STRINGER TILT. You'll find a wealth of information shared on this topic.

Re: '77 OMC Tilt motor

I have found our local automotive starter/alternator shop to be a wonderous source of help on 12v motor problems of any kind. They have fixed/rebuilt 12v motors for my pop-up camper, my trim/tilt motor and a winch motor for me for a fraction of what a replacement (new or rebuilt) would cost. They are great at troubleshooting too. If you just find yourself plain out of ideas see if you can trailer the boat down to them and I bet they hit on the problem pretty quickly. Just make sure they are qualified to work on "marine" applications.

Thanks for the ideas! The one about the local alternator shop looks to be the answer. I got the motor out and it was not easy. Not looking forward to putting it back. It fell apart when we got it out. We put it back together and it worked fine one way and hesitated the other way. I let it set for a minute and went and checked the hammer block(which was fine). Went back and checked the motor again and it would not work at all. Tapped on it with a hammer and it started working again. Looks as though the armature where the brushes contact is worn badly and will only contact in certain positions. At least I know what it is. Now to fix or replace it before fishing starts in two weeks. Thanks for the help! Augy

Re: '77 OMC Tilt motor

Hey there. I went thought this exact thing last year. When i Got the motor off i had to pour the water out of it. But after a good soak in some kerosene and a good rub down everything cleaned up nicely and it works great now. those motors are hella expensive, but the good thing is there easy to rebuild. You might have a dead spot on it look for some corosion where the brushes rub. Rebuild kits are availabe for these motors for about $40. If the springs on the brushes are rusted out, a rebuild is proabably a good idea.
