Hi,
Back in 2000 rabidfish answered a question about a 70s omc stern drive slipping in forward. He said, "You need to have the proper type "C" gear oil, but if it does and still slips, change the plastic spacers. (Part # 310428) $ 6.28 each. You probably don't need an entire rebuild. They wear out and cause the spring to no longer hold as tight. 9 times of 10 it's just that simple."
My 77 Reinell with OMC 175 Stern drive was on the trailer for three years after our boat house was damaged. I am re-commissioning her and thought everything was ready, but upon relaunch I had no reverse. I had drained the lower unit and refilled it with fresh off the shelf marine lower unit lube. I've checked both shift coils at 2.5 ohms and drawing 2.15 amps and tested the clutches by energizing the coils directly from the battery and rotating the prop by hand. Forward holds fine locking the prop in counter clockwise rotation, but reverse either gives a slight drag on clockwise rotation or none at all. I next plan to drain the lower unit again and refill with Type C. Is type C available only from boat dealers? Should I try to flush the unit with some sort of thinner oil, or should I just drain and refill with type C?
