1977 Johnson Seahorse 70 hp

About 5 years ago the previous owner hit a log and engine died. It seemed “seized up to
him”. He just parked it. I bought the boat/motor. I put a breaker bar on top of the recoil/flywheel mechanism and torqued on her till something gave. I hooked up the battery and she fired up. When I drive the boat it seems to run great at high rpm’s, but even after warm-up you gotta hit the choke to get her to go, otherwise it
bogs down and stalls. Also after it warms up it seems to making an odd whining sound and a slight knock comes from the engine. What’s my problem? Thanks.

Check the compression.
Check for loose insulation material under the cover, making contact with the flywheel.
Or underneath the flywheel, that the stator/trigger leads aren't rubbing on the flywheel. It could be internal (IE, rod, wrist pin, crankshaft wear), but rule-out external sources, like something loose.
After sitting for a while, you may have varnish partially plugging the jets.
The fuel pump diaphran will harden over time, and it couldn't hurt to rebild it.The kits are cheap, and it's a less than 1 hour job usually.
Have the prop re-hubbed and ballanced, if it knicked it. Check for a bent propshaft.
Sometimes after striking an underwater obstruction, the flywheel key will shear,or warp just enough to throw the timing outta whack. Remove the flywheel and inspect this (if you can get the flywheel off without too much grief..They can be bears sometimes).
Let us know how you fare so far.
