rewired the ingnition, put some fresh fuel mix into her , pushed the key in (found the key on the floor in a rotted handfull of stringer prior to gutting it out) and to my surprise the choke's closed as billed. turned the key and i'll be damed if the motor didn't fire right up! purred , heated up and began to uptake water into the lower unit and dischage. put into gear and with a small thud off went the propeller forward and reverse. this was in my driveway with water muffs. ran for a few minutes and turned off. waited and fired right up. same and same again.
what next? what to look for signs of trouble? or what should i replace to aviod trouble?
as stated in earlier threads this motor has not been run in years and was sitting out in a parking lot for who knows how long on a rotting away crestliner. is it too good to be true this thing just fired right up???? and then just restarted with ease? thanks for any input!

You should really post at your original as some won't know what has been asked and answered.
Be sure the fuel system is clean and sound. It is very common for a motor to start and run after years with little prep. But a fouled fuel system will surely foul up pumps, carbs etc. without a through check.Change the impeller.Change the gear lube.Make note of its condition. If milky that indicates water intrusion.Always change the washers on the drain and fill screws.
Grease and oil the various moving parts.

Are you using new plugs? If so look at the tips of each to see if they have the same type of burn patterns. Either oily or black or dry. A clean plug is a bad thing. Could be no spark on that cylinder or a blown head gasket. An outboard on water muffs will run fine on one or two cylinders. Once in the water like a lake or test tank it will not run. As spike mentioned get the fuel system cleaned and impeller changed along with gear oil. Might not hurt to run a few gallons of gas with more oil then normal say 24 to 1 just to be safe. After impeller and oil change take it out on the lake and beat the crap out of it near the landing. Take a kicker or trolling motor with you just in case.

NO , the plugs that came with it. i did clean them before (they were like new anyway) and then check each plug for fouling after i ran it . each plug looked exactly the same with a little dirtly oil on them. not too much and not too dark. the original gas tank however is not in the greatest shape. it definatley has rust in it . i flushed it and then pulled out the screen rod and cleaned that with water. the inside looks average at best. the motor does have an inline filter berore the actual engine filter. how effective are these filters against rust if i go with the original tank? it has all the bs on it and does fit well on the boat. by the way i used a clean plastic 3 gallon for the test run in drive.........thnx all!
