78 115 Sea Horse - Not starting

Firstly....excuse my lack of proper terminology....motor in question is a 1978 Johnson 115Hp Sea-Horse...old but generally been running ok.

The ignition switch was not working properly, and when put into the start position it stayed there unless manually put back into "on" (using my non tech terminology of: off, on and start, with start normally being impossible to keep key in that position unless manually holding it, except in my case it did stay). This meant that if left in "start", the small flywheel on the starter would keep spinning. Normally I remembered to return key to correct position....

Last trip out I forgot, and after about 15 minutes the engine started to stutter. I put it into neutral and immediately the engine stopped. This resulted in a tow back :)

When I try and turn the ignition switch now, absolutely nothing happens (no noise or clicks etc at all). Battery is charged and I can still raise and lower motor.

Ive dismantled the ignition switch (Lucas 128 SA, 34228D) and tried playing around with re-connecting it, but no joy.

I suspect that the motor was also overheating on one side, and had been meaning to get the thermostats changed...but typically hadn?t got around to it before this happened.

I?ve had a look at a couple of posts and troubleshoting things on these forums, and intend to get my multimeter out tomorrow !

Question is, does anyone know if this sounds like an ignition, solenoid, overheat (and subsequent consequences)..or something else ? Anything obvious I am missing or can self check to try and prevent an unwelcome repair bill....

You may have cooked the starter. I'd say bench test the starter second, replace the switch first!

Havent managed to get a new switch yet (will change anyway regardless of outcome), but I tested solenoid terminal and it gets 12V.

Does that mean I?m looking at replacing the solenoid ?

Also, I find the solenoid part on http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=972152df95ce7c7f1829ae589f5eb4c4 who dont ship internationally, but the part number doesn?t match to the one shown on Iboats that seems best match http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=111829&gd_row=64&**********=291732831

Are these quite interchangeable (78 115hp Sea Horse V4...115ETL78C I think). As they seem cheap I figured new better than Ebay...

1st check the inline fuse near the starter solenoid, it very possilbly is blown. short 20 amp.

Changed fuse and wasn?t that.

I was given a solenoid to test with, and rather stupidly I changed both ignition and solenoid before testing it again, so one of the two fixed it just not sure which.

I did try to bypass the old solenoid by passing a cable from big red cable in, to small cable out (not the earth..) and it didn?t fire either. Passing cable from live in to earth out produced a spark....Would that imply solenoid was not at fault ? Guess I can work it out by installing the old solenoid again, but I ran out of daylight !

Slight excitement after re-wiring the ignition and getting the motor running to find I couldn?t turn it off ! Fixed that now though also.

Wanted to say thanks for the hints etc, this is an extremely useful site.

I'm happy you got off so cheaply.:) It could have cooked the starter.:(
