Is there any way to tell whether I have a 25" or 20' shaft on my engine without dropping the lower unit

Re: 78 140 evinrude shaft length

Gcman49.... The shaft length measurment is not the actual length of the driveshaft. It pertains to the height of the transom and the location of the cavitation plate that is located just about the propeller. The usual position (location) of the cavitation plate should be approximately 1" below the keel of the boat.

To determine the shaft length of a engine, measure from the underside of the transom bracket (the engine bracket that sits on top of the transom) to the cavitation plate (the plate just above the propeller), then subtract one inch.

If your measurment is roughly in the area of 15", 20", 25" etc..... therein is your shaft length.
