78 6hp running problem

I have a 1978 Evinrude 6hp 2 stroke on my sailboat. Lately it seems to act like
it is running out of gas...and yes, I have plenty of fuel and the right
mix. It doesn't seem to want to idle but will run at a higher rpm. I
replace the fuel fitting on the fuel line and also a new primer bulb
thinking I was getting an air leak. Yesterday, it did the same thing. I
turned the rich/lean knob all the way in and then backed it out to where
it normally is and the motor starte right up and ran great...and then died
as we almost got out of the marina. I had to start it again and feather
the heck out of it to get back to the mooring ball. I have ordered a new
fuel pump and will try that. Does that sound like the problem? Or maybe
it's something with the carb?

Anyone have any ideas?

It's rather a pain to be floating around the mooring field with no control!

Thanks!

if the motor sits a lot unused, i would think carb. but it could also be running on one cylinder, did you check spark?

No didn't check spark. When I first start it, it runs real smooth...just won't hold an idle. Runs good at higher rpm but will still die.

thanks for the reply!
