Recently aquired this motor - don't have any history on it. Started and ran good when bought. Replaced l/u and water pump and tested in barrel. Started w/o much trouble but had rough idle. Ran alright at higher throttle. Thought carb had some trash in it so got some Seafoam to add to gas. Took out on water and was VERY difficult to start. Once started would barely run at low throttle. Put in gear and opened to WOT - ran fine - throttled back down after about 5 min and motor died. Tried starting later and still hard to start with rough idle. Carb looks real clean on outside and in throat - looks like new bowl gasket. Checked low idle mixture and it was set to about 1&1/2 turns out from seated position. Thinking I need to remove carb and clean real good, esp small idle passages. How do I remove carb? Do I need to remove pull start assy. to get at right side nut? Don't want to go in and cause more problems than neccesary. Appreciate any help.

Re: 78 EV 6hp Carb Removal

Right nut a little tricky, without removing everything... I had same problem on a 74' just recently... FR shared a little secret with me... Remove the top two bolts on top of the hand starter. Just loosen the bottom bolts just enough to slightly raise the cylinder from where its seated and gently lean it forward and hold it in that position. Be careful and dont pull it out all the way. You should now be able to reach the nut from the right side thru the opening you just created and losen it with your wrench. You can now spin it off. Put the cylinder back in position and reinstall one top bolt till you ready to reinstall it.. When you are ready it will be just a little difficult to get it started.. I had to use a pair of long needle nose to get it started then tighen it up..Good luck..Fishermanms
