Ok I have a 78 model 85hp Evinrude I placed on a 88 model pontoon I used the 88 model contol and wiring harness. Here is the issue. When I opened the control box the kill button wires were cut and the ends were not present. So this morning based on below schematic I wired in a marine kill switch on the helm and wires one wire to ground point and one wire to Black Yellow as in schematic. I am having the impeller replaced at marine shop and will be picking it up in a couple hours. I was telling a friend about wirting the kill switch and he said he thinks I screwed up he said the 78 has coils and you cannot ground it out to kill it. So now I am scond guessing my self any help would be appreciated if I wired this wrong

The 1978 V4 ignition switch grounds the powerpacks via the black wire with a yellow stripe. This instantly kills the engine by preventing it from firing.

If you have the harness and kill switch wires connected according to the diagram, you have it correctly wired.

Yes it does have coils but if you followed the schematic exactly by matching the color-codes......it will work correctly. I have the same motor and I installed mine last fall thanks to Iboats.com and the help I found here with the control schematic. I've had no poblems with mine so far.

Mine is a 79. Its good to see there are still some of these old motors being used besides just mine. They are strong little motors. :D

Why do you say fuel is coming out? Are you sure its not just water? Mine has a good flow of water coming out of the exhause ports and thats normal when you're on plane.

The thought of a combustable/flamable on a hot exhaust is scary....

Looked like premix and it was flooding out could not get it to rev up past about 1200 with throttle advance. If i lowered the throttle position so I could shift into gear it would die except a couple times. When it was able to get it in reverse it was barely on the trailer and could not get egnough power to even try to pull it off. In forward it would rev to about 2200-2400 full throttle. It also sounded if it was not firing on al cyliners. Motor ran fine on other boat 4 months ago.
