Rookie here trying to restore an old one. I finally got her running, and attacked the non-functioning power trim today. Motor runs strong, but every drop of fluid goes right into the bilge. While putting on new hoses, I noticed that one of the 'fat' hose fittings was at some point misthreaded, and attaching the new one is impossible on the screwed-up threads. So, am I buying a new motor now, or can I just replace the detachable lower part that has the hose fittings and thumbscrew valve gizmo? Thank you.

Hi and thanks for replying. I think helicoil is a threaded insert to a female coupling or fitting? Is that something to trust under high-pressure, like in hydraulic hoses? Does a special die shop have to insert them, or how does it work? Thanks.

heli-coils won't work on a flared fitting,in some cases you can remove the valve assm. and clean the threads with a extra nut if that don't work try to find a used valve that is guarented to work as a new one is very costly

Not entirely true - they'll work IF you make the hole a hair big, goop the threads and have a "use ONCE" mentality.

You drill and tap the hole to take the helicoil - then thread it in with a little tool - the result is the old thread size back. If you never did it - get a machine shop to do it.

-W
