78 johnson 25 hp moves at low speed but will not move when given gas

I was out fishing and realized I had some weeds on the prop. I reversed it and the weeds came off.I went to take off and the motor just wind and would not move the boat when I gave it gas. At idle the boat does go. I checked the prop by marking it and know I did not spin the prop hub.Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem.Any suggestions would be apperciated. Well your story sure suggests a spun hub, but you say not. So......you did check the drive (shear) pin, didn't you? The only other thing that will make it slip without making a ton of grinding noise is stripped drive shaft splines.
