78' johnson 70 hp not going into gear??

in the middle of my fishing trip this past weekend, my motor suddenly would not go into forward gear, it will go into reverse but not back to neutral.

i have to take off the cowling and pull it into gear but it will go back into neutral from forward, basically, . . it will only go backwards.

i cant figure it out and i got a lake trip this friday!!

does anyone know what the problem is?

if it shifts manually at the moter with cowling off it must be your cable or your remote lever shift assembly if its a 78 and hasn'been apart the grease in there is just like glue binding it together you will have to dismantle it and clean it.
