78' johnson 70 hp starting problems

my 70 hp johnson will not start. i have to wrap a rope around the flywheel and pull start it, but once it starts and runs awhile its starts fine. the selinoid is clicking when i turn the key but it dont start.

any one know what the problem is?

It appears that what you really mean is that the starter won't crank the engine over....... not that the starter cranks the engine over but the engine won't start.

If so, the first step is to disconnect all of the starter related cable ends, including the battery terminals, cables at the solenoid, and the ground cable at the powerhead, etc. Clean the cable ends and whatever terminal they're connected to. Make sure that they're tightened with a wrench or pliers, not your fingers if using wing nuts anywhere. This eliminates a possible voltage drop due to loose or tight but dirty connections.
