I am considering buying a 1978 25hp johnson outboard associated with a jon boat. The boat is fine but the motor has a shifting problem. I was informed that the motor would shift into reverse just fine, but when shifted into forward it would only go about 1 mph. I am thinking this is a linkage problem. I would guess not seeing the motor that the linkage would have to be taken out and repaired. Any suggestions.

Re: 78 johnson shift problem

The linkage on those motors are adjustable to a point. Thers is a access cover about mid way down the midsection on the shifting side. The rod also might be bent. Just make sure when the motor is in forward it doesnt jump out of gear. Those motors are notorious for doin that as they get older. Have had many like that. Very nice little motors built great lots of power and easy to work on. Good luck

Thanks, st marine. I am also wondering if the top of the gear(forward) is stripped and the bottom side of the gear (reverse) is ok.
