78 rude 140 shift rod adjustment?

Fianally got another LU for my motor.Seloc says adjust shift rod to 21.94" from lu housing to center of hole in shift rod.Good but what gear should lower unit be in.it makes a big difference.Thanks dave

Just did a search under shift rod length adjustment.Joe Reeves helped a guy with a 89' 90 hp engine and mentioined having the shift rod in the neutral position when taking the measurement.

Davxx, I am quoting from my 1978 Evinrude 140HP factory manual here:Shift Rod Adjustment...Long shaft length= 21.834 inches +/- 0.036 in.<br />Extra Long Shaft Length= 26.834 inches +/- 0.036 in.<br />GEARSHIFT IN NEUTRAL................piniongear<br />p.s. Thanks piniongear,I already set it at 21.94 per (Sucko)Seloc manual.I'll see what happens.Unfortunatly I lost the rod pin and I have to get one this am.Dont need the copy but thanks for the offer. dave
