78 rude 140 v4 driveshaft change.

What is involved in changing driveshaft? 25" to 20"? I can get both.Seloc is confusing,and wrong in a lot of cases. thanks.

Dave,I can't find your other post.<br /><br />Basicaly drop the drive,remove the waterpump stuff,the upper driveshaft bearing housing.Remove the prop shaft bearing carrier.Remove the pinion gear nut and the gear,remove drive shaft and reassemble with new pinion nut and wpi.<br /><br />In a shop,the new shaft needs to be shimmed properly in a special tool.Also while apart all seals and gaskets would be replaced.<br /><br />DHP

Also need to do the water pipe from the water pump & shift rod.

Getting back to shift pattern My hydromechanical is shift rod down in fwd, up to neutrul,up more to reverse. is the straight mechanical shift pattern the same?This is with the lower unit off and using the shift rod only. Thanks

Davexx,<br /><br />The 1978 140 does NOT have the hydromechanical gearcase. You must have a 1977 model.<br /><br />The mechanical shift gearcase shifts OPPOSITE than the hydromechanical and has completely different shift linkage.
