Well, I got the boat in the water today for the first time and...she floats!! It started well and runs smooth (78 Taylor SS BBF). The only thing is, when you bring it above 2k and hold it, it starts to backfire out of the carb. When it does this, it's not real loud or violent, just a small pop every now and again. Could this be a timing issue or a carb issue? Thanks in advance for any help.

What do you have the timing set at? Glad you got it wet.

A friend had an old Ford truck with a 460 in it that ran about the same way. Turned out the timing marks on the Vibration dampner are marked both Before and After TDC, and he had it timed on the wrong side (ADTC) instead of BTDC. Also recheck the plug wire routing, they can be crossed and still run ok at idle.
