79 15 hp Evenrude rebuild gasket question

I am about to mate my crankcase and cylinder block back together and I am wondering about this layer of gasket seal I need to rub on the mating surfaces before I bolt it together. Do I need to coat the upper and lower seal surface also? Any other pointers would be appreciated.

A thin film on either surface is plenty. No need to coat both. Wipe off the excess when it's together. Make absolute certain that the crank is sitting squarely in the block before you install the cover. You don't want any of the bearings to hang-up on the locating pins. (I haven't done any of those, specifically. I'm assuming they have locating pins for the crank bearings like the bigger ones.)
