I see the beam on the 18 ft Mariner is 75", could you Mariner experts let me know what the floor width is at the stern, and then at the console. Anyone running it with a 50HP main? How does it push the boat?

Thanks,
OC

Re: '79 18 ft Mariner

My 18' SS is most likely the same hull. I seem to recal my deck boards were something like 65" wide.

I don't know about a 50HP. I've got a 90 on mine (it's got bigger carbs on it so I may or may not be running a little more than 90) and I can hit 40MPH with a light load and it leaps out the hole. I think a 50 will certainly plane it but it will be a dog. Mine is rated for 150.

I looked up the specs between the two, and your boats beam is about 5" wider and about 3" taller, but anyway that should roughly put the Mariner at about 60" on the floor. The Mariner is also 205 lbs lighter, so I would think that would help also with a little smaller motor. I am looking at a '79 that has a 50 HP mounted, ideally I would like to put a bigger motor on, but $$$ will determine that.

Can anyone else chime in? I've PM'd a couple Mariner owners, but nothing in return. Seeking info on the 18ft model.

A number of years back I owned a Mariner 18' but mine had a 70 hp jonny. This was a very nice outfit, used mostly for fishing. Two-three persons and gear she would top out at 34 mph. The 50 hp would be adequate for two persons, limited gear and probably a 25 mph speed. Not for skiing but what do you plan on using it for?

Fishing would be the main plan, do you remember what the floor width was?

Re: '79 18 ft Mariner

I had a 1973 18 foot mariner that came with a 50HP evinrude. It planed but was underpowered if loaded. In 1985 I repowered with a 3 cyl. 65 HP Suzuki and it was a big difference and running at 3/4 throttle was same speed and more efficient than the 50HP at full throttle. It was a great boat for fishing.
