79 ,200hp. merc/ trash in carb again?

Last year my mechanic rebuilt the carbs on my 79 200hp. mercury o/b. Actually he had to redo them 3 times, apperantly some trash kept getting in and stopping the needle from seating. So after the last time he cleaned them i purchased and installed a good fuel filter before running it again, ran fine for a few fishing trips, until the next breakdown hehe, flywheel was worn so bad wouldnt start(see last post) $400 later iam back in business :) ) only for a day tho as the stator burned up next,so yesterday i installed the new stator and fired up the ol 79 merc on the hose ,and sounded sweet, but i noticed fuel dripping from the bottom carburator when it was idling, of course when i throttled up to 2 or 3 k rpm it would suck it in and not drip. Anyway iam hoping that when i take it to the lake if i can get it on plane maybe it will clear it's self , if not i will have to attempt a carb cleaning myself,as i cant afford the mechanic this time. But iam wondering watt could have caused this... float set too high maybe? Bad gas? sat in drivway 2 or 3 months till i got the flywheel, just added some fresh gas in with the old. I have a water seperator type filter ( looks like an oil filter on a car) Iam afraid it's not going to perform well when i go to the lake today, going to try to blow it out,and get rid of some fuel to make room for new. Again i want to thank all who reply I really appreciate your comments and advise. iam adding a couple of questions on the way out...(1) which is the best manuel for me (79 200hp. merc) and (2) The kill swith on my 79 challenger has a clip that holds the button in while running, it looks like a baby bottle nipple, if any1 can direct me to a place to get 1 i would appreciate it , i dont want to replace the whole switch unless i really have to. :) thanx agin all.. I love this place .

Before tearing it down,or paying a wrench to operate on it, pump the primer until firm, and see if it is expelling fuel. If it is, it's the needle valve sticking open, more than likely.
Have someone gently keep the ball firm (never squeeze those primers too strongly, or you'll pop the diaphrams, and then you do have an operation to perform...
While they have fuel comming out of the everflow, tap the carb's bowl gently with a screwdriver handle. It should quit. run the motor ,and let the fresh fuel disolve the rest of the varnish.
The first place varnish can form is right here on this needle, and in areas not submerged in fuel. Varnish can form in as little as 2 weeks in the right conditions!
The motor must be dead-level, of course, or the floats won't shut off the fuel when they are supposed to.

Thanx 12footer...I just got back from the lake, went for a test run. The wind is about 20 mph hour today and and 4ft swells lol but had the lake pretty much to myself, was determined to try out my new stator and see how bad my carbs were...we headed into the wind wot, that ol 79 merc ran like a scalded cat the boat wasnt takin it too well tho almost lost the front seat and lottsa screws started workin outta the deck lol, turned it around and screamed back into the cove cove and eased it down to about 1000 rpm, and putted on back to try my luck fishin , so far is way better than i had expected, didnt die on me till i slipped it in neutral, and when we were dun freezin our tails off it fired right up,and we putted out to the ramp no probs, and this time when i got on the trailer and slipped it back to neatral it didnt die, and i didnt see fuel leakin out of the front cover so... maybe cleared itself. But i will sure do like u suggested tomarrow ill let it idle on the hose, we did tap the bowls the other day while it was running but didnt know to do it off and squeez bulb ( another lesson, i didnt know not to squeez too hard) thanx a heap bud, i appreciate the help :)
