79 25hp johnson question

got it given to me and i'm told it runs. The head is not seized but cant seem to put it in gear. will this johnson go into gear when not running ? is there a safety that prevents from starting in gear ? its pull start. i had an old 15 rude and I seem to remember it did go into gear when not running.

yes, it will go into gear when not running, but you may need to spin the prop. Yes, there is a safety interlock that keeps it from starting in gear and tossing you out of the boat.
