Re: 79 70hp lower unit

With the shift shaft in the correct position for Fwd gear (meaning as far CCW as it'll go before shifting into Neutral), place the reverse lockout cam (aka 'shift cam') on the shift shaft such that the middle of the ramp on the cam is lined up with the reverse lockout rod sticking down from the exhaust tower.

The way this works is, as soon as you shift CCW to Neutral, the flat spot at the top of the lockout cam blocks the reverse lockout rod from falling down. This keeps the reverse lockout hooks firmly wrapped around the tilt pin. This action continues as you shift into Reverse.

If you get one spline off either way on the lockout cam positioning, it'll be obvious. Only one position will get the reverse lockout rod pointing to the middle of the ramp on the cam.

i thank you.i think i get what you are saying.if i line this up right can i check this without starting the motor to see if it is in the right spot?i dont mind a little trial and error,as long as it does not messup the lower unit in the process.

Yeah, once you bolt the unit back up you can shift to Fwd and check how the hooks work. Then shift back to Neutral and the motor should be locked down. Remember that you always want to have the motor shifted to Fwd when lowering down onto the tilt pin. If the reverse lockout hooks are locked down, when you lower the motor the outsides of the hooks will ride on the tilt pin without latching down. This binds up the shifting and makes it hard to operate, not to mention the lockout function not working!

Merc made the locks work in both Reverse and Neutral, otherwise if you were going real fast & you chopped the throttle back to Neutral, the drag of the motor would cause it to kick up hard if not locked down.
