I am currently in the process of overhauling my carbs on my 79 evinrude 85hp. Wile I had the carbs apart last night I noticed that the jets vary form carb to carb. IE the top carb has two holes mid body on the carb these are covered with a standard screw (flat head) equipped with an oring.... the jet under this screw on the left side had 5 25 25 or somthing stamped on it, the adjacent one on the same carb had a 27 or... I can't remember the exact number, kinda hard to read, it didn;t get stamped well. The bottom carb had similar staggered jetting.

My question is.....is this normal for a outboard to have staggered jetting ? or different jetting form carb to carb? Thanks Brennen

Re: 79 85hp carb jets

Looking at the parts diagram it still doesn't tell me what jets are supposed to be in it,with out ordering them. The right side slow speed jet on the top carb has a 57 and the slow jet on the left barrel has a 28. The bottom carb has 25's in both sides.

I forgot to pick up the proper tool to take out the high speed jets, so I'm unsure on those right now.

Does any one happen to have a evinrude 85hp close to the same year (1979) with the type II carb's?

what i found is the low speed are suppose to be 25's. it sure sounds like someone in the past has mixed them up.

Re: 79 85hp carb jets

The carburetor(s) may not be original to the engine.

The 1979 85HP came with choked carburetors with only high and low speed jets; two of each per carburetor.

The high speed were all # 323903 - orifice # 48C. = .048 opening

The idle jets were #323003 - which is # orifice #25. = .025 opening

A metric #56 drill bit base will pass through orifice 48C, but a # 55 will not.

A metric number #72 drill bit base should just make it through orifice #25.

Re: 79 85hp carb jets

thanks ezeke, just what I was looking for.

It appears some one may have changed around the slow speed jets. I'll have to pick up some drill bits and check them to make sure what I have is correct. It also appears who ever did a carb rebuild last time use the wrong gaskets that mate the carbs to the engine, the gaskets I got with the rebuild had a small hole in them that matched up with a slot and hole on the engine, the old gaskets were missing that hole.
