just purchased a 79 carver santa cruiz and have some questions i cant seem to find the answers to any help would be greatly appritiated.
So me and my mom went in halfs on a 28'4" according to the title carver with a flybridge and twin inboard 350s ... not the original engine they are the center bolt engines .. i know the engines well as my previous occupation for the last 11 years as a restoration and autobody tech.
took her out for her first real run labor day and has some issues she would not plane out at all and givin it a good go and just dig in the water and run 16.8 mph according to my gps i know my props are in need of repair and was wondering if that could be the whole problem ? Another think i am unsure of is when i turn the switch next to the wheel inside to change the steering from the flybridge to the cabin to dont work inside still ... i have the original owners manual and followed the instructions i am not finding where the swichover ( for lack of a better term) is located. just tryin to figure out an old boat and get it goin so i can take mom out and she can enjoy her retirement more and i can fish

Do you have trim tabs? That could be why you aren't getting on plane. On my Carver I can't get on plane if they aren't all the way down for the most part, and I just about always leave them down except for list adjustment. If they're up all I do is push water and burn way too much fuel.

yes i have trim tabs but they are inoperable they have been fixed in a down position with wedges ? was told by the marine mechanic that that was common and thats what he did to his boat ?? not sure if they are all the way down

hmm, tabs down would only help you get on plane, not hurt the effort. When you rev up to get on plane, how high are the rpms getting to? It could very well be, as you said, that your props aren't catching enough water. They could just be in bad condition or underpropped, whereas you'd have to increase the pitch. Does the manual say what is spec'd out for the prop? It should be diameter, pitch and shaft size ; i.e. 18" x 20P x 1 1/4" are my spec's. The flybridge to cabin controls switch I have no idea on.

Re: 79 carver new boat

i havent found anywhere in the manual that states the specs for the props and cant find any information on what they should be i did talk to the owner that spend a ton of money on it tonight and they are 220 crusaders (305) not the 350 so im guessing ill send the props to be redone and hope the prop shop knows what they are supposed to be ... the last owner said he ran almost 30mph with it and got 1.5 mpg at 18mph which seems really good for boat of that size

Call Carver with your year and model, hull number and any other info they might need. They should be able to look up what props are spec'd : (920) 822-1600
