'79 Evinrude 35hp - No pee stream...muffs?

I fired up my 1979 Evinrude 35hp motor last night. It was the first run of the season. I had the hose running and the muffs on the water intake along the shaft. The motor fired up and seemed to run well. However, no pee stream came out of the back...or anywhere. I ran it about a minute to ensure that the thermostat was open.

When I shut the motor off, there was more smoke than usual coming out of one of the exhaust ports. I checked the pee hose from the fitting next to the power pack, all the way to the pee stream exit. The hose is clear.

Here is my question: Is it possible that one side of my water intake is clogged (there are screens on both sides of the lower unit shaft)? Since water only comes out of one side of the muffs, would it make sense to try flipping it to the other side?

I have found on both my brothers mid eighties Jonson and my late ninties Evinrude, when running the engine on "muffs" the prop has to be removed so the muffs can be installed from the rear, however I have no idea why it would make a differance????

The screens go to a common cavity. Makes no difference at all which side you put the water in.

Thanks for the responses. I did get the boat and motor in a lake last night, it she started peeing water almost instantly. What a feeling of relief.

That's interesting about taking off the propeller. I assume that just gets the muffs seated better.

IMHO I think the muffs seal better, there is slightly less water leaking from them when installed from the rear. I don't think it matters which side the water intake is installed. I was reading from my shop manual and it recomended removing the prop and installing them from the rear. I assumed this was for safety reasons only, I may have assumed wrong.
