Hey folks, new to the site. Just sold my 2000 after fixing her up, inside but moreso the hull. That's another topic. Got a lead on a real nice Holiday, going to see it and run it on the water. At first glance, she looks great.

Any input appreciated.

Welcome Starman, it does look clean and might have the V5 hull. Good for open water rides. Keep us posted on progress.

Yes, you said it is a V5!!!!!

Re: 79 Holidayv5

just a 120 OMC

Just got the heads up today and the owner shot some pics over. The boat appears clean, simple sand/strip trailer, concern would be the engine. The interior looks well maintained and was told the floor and transom solid.

Haven't received subsequent reply yet on how dry she is, but I've tackled that before.

I am probably not the only one here who have chatted with Starcraft folks on the phone before. If you look at recent designs, they did away with the keel strip and the hollow end at the aft, guess why?

If she runs well, looks as good as the pics, what do you think she should sell for?

How big is it? I also have a '79 V5, but in a 22' SuperSport and an outboard. Just started re-doing it but had it out 10 times this summer. It rides very nice. Mine was a complete original (albeit quite weathered) with a perfect running Evinrude 140 from the original owner. I gave $3k. Hard to know what kind of a deal that was being it seems to be a very rare boat. Hope this hepls. I don't think you can go wrong.

Oh yeah....If you have pics of the rear bench I would LOVE to see them. My wife wants a bench across the back but the SS's didn't come with them.

Thanks.

The mere fact it is an I/O is making me shy away from it, regardless of the MFG

If it`s in good shape
runs well

Re: 79 Holidayv5

Here is some info I found out, but yet haven't seen the boat up close and in person:

The owner just bot her a few months ago. I was told this Star hasn't seen the light of day the past 10 years, covered and stored indoors.

The hull, floor, and transom are sound and solid(DRY). The console has a slight sag in the centerline. The engine runs. The rear jump seats are missing the butt cushions and the seats flanking the engine cover missing.

The trailer needs a sanding, primer, and paint. The tires are cracking and need replacing, and chances are the bearing/hubs will need some maintenance. Small things need replacing like the fuel cap system. All gauges work. The seller wants $1700.

Re: 79 Holidayv5

...If i had an I/O I would pull the motor and drive install a bracket mount for an outboard ..I/O's can be quite the money pit...good luck v5 models are somewhat rare.

That would be a consideration at the first sign of the I/O taking a powder. Even then, what approach would you do? How would you handle the drive boot? Would a bracketing system to handle an outboard require such clearance that it may look odd? Would you fabricate a splashwell instead into a whole new transom setup/cutout?

The 2 things that concern me about I/O is the shorter usage season due to cold weather and the space they take up inside.

That said, this boat is currently water ready. For $1700, is that a fair price?

crumb, quick Q.............what is the distance from the center of the console to the tip of the bow in the storage area. If I purchase this Star, I may want to fabricate a rod locker underneath that area.

Re: 79 Holidayv5

Hey guys, as much as I want a V5 hull(LUND copied as IPS), just don't want to deal with I/O expenses when they arrive, and they usually do, plus I prefer an open bow.

I think the Holiday dash in wood and that classic steering wheel is something I would try to copy/fabricate in another STAR.

I found a 78 SS outboard, too bad not a V5 hull, and will get that instead to work on. Therefore, here is the Craigs link for the 1979 18' HolidayV5, water ready according to the owner who stated it was in storage the past 10 seasons..................somebody should grab this.

We have been glossing over the fact that it's AN OMC!!!! Forget not wanting an I/O....you really don't one you can't get parts and service for!! It's not even a Cobra, it's a Stringer. So you really really can't get parts. Let that one out to pasture unless someone wants to repower it.

Awesome hull! Terrible driveline. If it has sat for 10 years my guess is that it's a long way from water ready. I sorta feel like the price is a high given the big hole with rubber boot in the back. This rig might be a good candidate for a bracket or a OB transom conversion/cut but that gets pricey when you add in the initial buy.

Re: 79 Holidayv5

And the reason I started posting here was the great advice from all of you experienced Star folks............thank you.

Lesser initial investment in my 1978 SS and looking forward to rehabbing it into something when I pick it up.

By the way, I mentioned earlier about the leaky hull I worked on a different Star..............

You know that keel strip they used to have, the one that punctured holes in a perfectly good one-piece hull, the one with the open hollow end aft?

A STAR engineer admitted it was a flaw in design, as it placed water in the cavity, and upon pressure, allowed seepage during flex.

Anyone having an issue with that, PM me. I found a solution that worked.
