have a johnson 140 seahorse . the other day we were half way to shore and the boat reved up like the prop came off (luckey it didnt). It did idle back to shore and we managed to get it loaded. On land I put it in gear and tried to turn the propeller by hand and it had resistance. I even watched the flywheel while doing that. my question is I guess is what kinda clutch system does it have and could the sloppy linkage be part of the problem, even though it did it all at once?

Not sure what you are saying when You said you were watching the flywheel.
It sounds like you need a new prop because the existing one is slipping around its own rubber bushing.

You can get the hub fixed at a prop shop and avoid having to buy a new prop.

You can use a black magic marker to mark the brass splined prop sleeve with the prop itself. Run the engine in the water under load. Check the prop. If the marks have moved, you have a bad hub.

Thanks for the information guys. Im gonna try that. I am mechanically inclined but I never messed with one. wasnt sure weather there was a clutch of some sort. Ill trial it at the lake again with the marker and check the bushing. thanks for your time guys!:)
