my 1979 Johnson 150 will move up and down thru the trim range but will not tilt. It has plenty of fluid and worked in the fall. The trim motor sounds strong. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 79 Johnson 150~Have trim but NO tilt

Welcome bama!

When you checked the fluid level in the reservoir, did you have the engine tilted all the way up?

Check the level like this.....

Tilt the engine all the way up. If the engine will not go up, losen the manual release screw and raise the engine up manually and tighten the release screw.

Check the level in the reservoir and add fluid as needed. Correct level is the fluid even with the fill hole.

Cycle the engine all the way down and all the way up 3 to 4 times. Check the level again (engine all the way up) and add as needed. Repeat the cycling up and down.

When the level stays even with the fill plug hole, the system is full.

If you have any questions, just post them here. Let us know what you find.

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions

I tilted up motor and double checked the fluid, it's good. the motor will tilt if I assist it but drops quickly when I let off the up switch. Is it possible to change the fluid in the system. I used power steering fluid last fall when I changed out the trim motor. I wonder if that has effected the system. Thanks in advance.

Maybe you have orings leaking through or a valve or shuttle vlv sticking/moving very little in the pump. I'm not sure if the power steering fluid would effect the rubber in the orings. Could be you have some dirt in the system somewhere causing the problem.

Oring packages are still available for the TNT unit. I would get a manual for the engine before trying any maint on the TNT unit. The manual also has some trouble shooting guides for the TNT unit also.

Don't know of any pat way of flushing the system and changing out the fluid. Usually it's a "tear down clean parts reasemble" type thing.

One of the other guys may jump in here and give you some ideas too.

You should lift up the motor by hand and screw the screw out so the air can come out.I had that on my motor and thats how i resolved it.

Danny, it is great that you joined the forum, welcome, but it is not necessary to comment on year old threads. I would hope that these ppl have resolved their issues by now. At least you are using the search function, lol.
