Re: 79 mercury 90 hp tilt trim

There are two reasons that system will bleed down. The first is bad teflon seals on the pistons inside the PTT cylinders. There are complete rebuild kits avail for <$50/each cylinder. The second reason is a bad control valve, but this is more remote. The answer to this problem is to replace the control valve.

The price quoted to you is outrageous. I recommend another shop.

BTW the teflon seals need a special tool to install them. The tool is like a ring compressor. The rest of the PTT cylinder parts install w/o any issue. Is there any oil leaking out of the piston rod to cylinder joint?

no there is no oil leaking anywhere sounds good goes up an down fast just bleeds back down . where is this control switch you talked about might look into that before i order the rebuild kit. also the guy at the boat shop called today an wanted to know if we had carbs apart witch we have not an said he pulled them off to rebuild an on all 3 carbs the main jets were missing .we've had it out on lake 4 times ran decent we just had to spray fuel oil mix in carbs to start .is that posable to run like that .anyway tks once again.

It is doubtful that the motor will run w/o main jets. They are located under the brass plugs in the base of the carb. I suspect he doesn't know the difference between the main jets and the backdrag jets in the carb bowl covers.

The control valve is on the base of the pump resevoir. It is where the hoses attach. There are no rebuild kits, nor adjustments for it.
