I need information on setting the base timing on a 2006 8.2 liter Bravo engine. I have worked on fuel injected GM engines for years, and I know the ecm needs to be placed in base timing mode simply by disconnecting a wire in the harness or jumping the ALDL connector. Is there a specific procedure from Mercruiser for base timing? The owner has had nothing but a huge headache from this boat and is fed up dealing with unscrupulous repair shops that won't stand behind their work or take responsibility for their mistakes. I'm licenced mechanic (32 years) and teach automotive mechanics in high school. I really would like to help this guy out and also increase my knowledge as well. If anyone has links to manuals or repair information it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you have a 8.2 engine? I say that Because Mercruiser did not have a 8.2 engine in 06, They had a 8.1/496, The 8.2 was the 454/502 style engine up until about 2001.

On the 8.1/496 The engine timing is not adjustable at all, It is done by the PCM, Reading the crank sensor and on newer models the camshaft Position sensor.

There is no distributor on the 8.1/496 style engine, It has coil packs.

Ok, it must be an older engine because it has a distributor and not coil packs. I'll get the owner to give me some more info on the exact year and model. Thanks for your help. I'll repost when I have more for you to go on.
