Hey everyone,

I have read a ton of posts and still couldn't find a answer to my question.

Had a t-top installed this year and wanted to know if I should mount my existing 8' ft VHF antenna on the roof of the top or buy a smaller 4' antenna to mount instead?

The top height is about 7'. And I boat on the ocean.

Does it matter? Wouldn't i want more range if I could get it?

What do you think?

As always, thanks for everyones insight!!

VHF is line of sight communication. The higher the antenna the better your range. I'm have two Shakespeare 5225 XT antennas mounted on my hardtop that is 8.5 ft off the water.

No problem taking with other boats 15-20 miles away if they have a decent setup as well.

You want to measure the height of the t-top on your trailer and determine road clearances. Then decide if you will remember to swivel down the antenna when you travel.

when it comes to VHF antennas BIGGER is better. Use and 8 footer. Use GOOD cable, and a GOOD antenna. Expect to pay for them as well.
