I am looking for a 4 stroke kicker motor for my Islander and am looking at an 8 hp long shaft honda. Any thoughts on if this is a big enough motor?
I had an 8 hp merc 2 stroke on my 19' Islander which worked great but I dont want the hassles of mixing oil and a separate gas tank.

Just sold my 2003 4 stroke merc 9.9 off of my 22 Holiday and it worked great. Selling the big boat and had a buyer for the 9.9 so its gone now. That is enough to move the bigger boat agenst most tides on the Pacific Ocean Tides.

I'd bet you'd be fine - probably work a little hard if wind/waves kicked up but that's when you'd start up the main eh:)

Cool...I wasnt looking forward to hanging something off the back larger than 8 to 10 hp because of the bulk and weight of the 4 strokes. I'll go check out that 8 hp tonight.

I would say it depend on where you fish. I won't put less than a 15hp on my 21 Cheiftain. My 01 Johnson 15hp with 4 blade prop pushes me 5 mph in the ocean @ wot. A 25hp I tried hit 7 mph.
Lake fishing an 8 would be ok, but there are times I am 20 miles off shore.

All my fishing is on the Great Lakes....mostly Lake Erie, not very often more than 15 miles off shore.

From my experience with a 15hp and 25hp kicker, I would go with a 15 or 20hp.
Alot of guys on the pacific coast are using the 9.9 high thrust 4 strokes and they claim good results, A friend of mine has the 9.9 high thrust and he used it to troll his 21' duchworth in the ocean. At dock it looked like it moved alot of water. Has big shallow pitch prop.

I was looking at going to a 20hp honda, but just could not justify when I have a low hr. 15hp 2001 johnson on the boat now.

I personally would not go with a standard run of the mill 8hp, not enough motor to get you home on the big lakes at 15 miles out.
