8 HP Johnson Remote Throttle?

Have a 94 2 cycle kicker and looking to hook up a remote throttle control. But not the kind with a mounted shifter. Found several companies that make electronic hand held controls but they don't have one for this model. I thought that several years ago I saw on West Marine a hand held manual twist type control for these but can't locate it anywhere. Of course I could have imagined it. If anyone knows of something I would appreciate info. Thanks

I don't know of one. I wish I did. I have a 92 6 hp, which is essentially the same outboard. The way they're set up, it's different from earlier models...hard to operate as a remote. I'm trying to figure out an extension handle for mine, with some way to shift the thing from the middle seat of my 12' aluminum boat. A handheld electronic controller would be perfect.

OMC made a remote kit for those. They can still be found, but it takes a little hunting. I could post some pictures later this week if anyone is super-curious as to what they look like.

I'd appreciate that. I doubt I'd spend the money, but it might give me an idea of how to make up an extension handle that would incorporate shifting. The throttle's no problem, but if I couldn't shift, it'd be a waste.

If you're just interested in shifting, the remote kits for any 9.9 or 15hp would do just fine. Way cheaper too.

Well, it seems like most of what I'm finding are for the side shifter. The 6 & 8 from the early 90's had the shifter on the front of the engine. Plus, the tiller handle uses a cable to operate the throttle, rather than the old gear system.

I'm beginning to have a picture in my mind of what my extension handle will look like. The throttle business is handled like all of the extensions. You turn the extension handle and it turns the throttle, since it's clamped to it. It looks to me like what I need is a sleeve over the handle that's independent, with a push-pull business on the far end, and some sort of linkage to the front shifter. The sleeve would have to be attached to the outboard and not turn when you used the throttle. Then you could push or pull the sleeve to shift.

The concept's simple. Making it pretty, not so much. I could probably use a commercial extension handle and a PVC pipe sleeve for the shifting. I'll ponder it a bit.

Yep, the kind I have no longer applies past '90. Sorry for the red herring. You should be able to make something decent looking though. A remote handle with a mid pivot point should work.

You'd connect the top of the existing shifter to the bottom of the remote. It'd be backwards, but functional. You could also connect top-to-top, but you'd lose some good lever action.

Only thing I can find for shift and throttle is teleflex morse stuff. They have for just about every application and adapter kits for shifting. Haven't looked on iboats yet but bet they have them
