I have a brand new 8 HP yamaha motor. It is an 08, but was sitting in the dealership till april, when i bought it.
It was running rough, because i must have ran some dirty fuel thru it. So i cleaned out the carb today.
I took it off, and cleaned it, then put it back on.
when i tried to start the motor, I pulled it 2 times, then the flywheel would not move an inch.

the last 2 weeks the motor was laying on its side, and oil leaked out, but not onto any electronics.

The work i did to it should have had no effect on locking up the engine. I lost one of the bolts that locks in the flywheel cover.
Maybe somehow that bolt fell down into the carb hole, and got in the cylinder?
I guess if i took the heads off, i could tell.

But i'm thinking i should just take it into the dealer, since they should fix it for free, since it's under waranty.

any thougths as to why the flywheel would lock up?

Warranty does not cover something you did to it, find the bolt
do you think the cylinder has oil in it causing a hydrolic lock up?

the carb had oil in it. so some prob did get into the cylinders.
should i pull the heads off?
take the spark plugs out?

Re: 8 HP yamaha, flywheel lockced up

you hit the nail on the head 99,
I took the bottom plug out, and oil came pouring out.
after the plugs were out the flywheel would turn easy.

i drained most of the oil out, and put the plug back it. but it locked up again.
i guess i need to get more oil out.

should i leave the motor sitting on the side, to drain the oil out the plug holes?
or leave the motor upright, so the oil will somehow go back down where it belongs?

I'm worried that on it's side, oil will leak back into the cylpiders.

but when the oil leaked in the first place, it was laying on the other side, (the same side as the dipstick).
no oil should leak when laying on this side. I'm just worried about oil going from the resivor into the pistons.

Re: 8 HP yamaha, flywheel lockced up

finally got the motor running. but it is still really stally. like it was before.
after you start it, it wants to stall unless you bump it up to about half throttle.

sometimes choking it will help too.
I cleaned the carb, but i think i did not really clean out all of it.

I'm no expert. The body of the carb, had small canals going thru the steel body. I just sprayed brake cleaner down them. It had 2 jets going down into the fuel bowl. i took them out and cleaned them. but i am guessing my low speed jets are still clogged?

how do you clean them? i did not see how i could take the thing apart anymore than i had.

(I took this pic before i took anything apart, in case i had trouble getting it back together)

Re: 8 HP yamaha, flywheel lockced up

I got the motor running great now.
my only concern is that it is not charging the battery.

I hooked up a multi-meter to the ends of the wires that hook to the battery. And I had the meter on the DCv setting at 200,
and it read 20 or so. on any other setting i did not get a reading at all. I had a blown fuse, and after i replaced it i got the 20 volt reading.

This is an electric start motor, with a pull start built in also. can you run it without a battery hooked up?

Now that does sound like warranty work unless you have been messing around with that also.
What blew the fuse?
It should not be reading 20V DC, but your meter may have a problem not the motor. hard to tell from here
Did you have the battery hooked up while you were measuring?

Re: 8 HP yamaha, flywheel lockced up

i measured again, and it was around 14- 15 volts.
I had a jump box hooked up to it. and i tried to measure with no battery hooked up, and it did not get any reading.

but with the battery hooked up it was at 15 volts. so i think all is well.

I think the fuse has been blown for a while.
maybe someone hooked up the wires backwards to the battery.

on the boat i use 2 6 volt batteries wired together to make 1 12 V battery.

those gel cells are not recommended to hook up to these motors from what I remember reading somewhere. Probably Yamaha
