80-81 merc overheating yesterday

ihave a 1980-81 merc 7.9 yesterday it overheated and stalled. Today i put it in a bucket of h2o and found only warm air comming out of the tailtell. What could this be (impeller, h2o pump)?<br /><br />What else should(and how) should i check?<br /><br />also while I am in there what else should i change?<br /><br />and is there a good place for merc parts online?<br /><br />I know its alot but thanks :cool:

It is allmost surely, a bad impeller,but check the discharge tube on the starboard side for a blockage too.<br />The impeller is about 10buks, and can be ordered on line or purchased thru any merc dealer, and some boating supply houses.<br />they are very comon engines, so the parts are easy to locate for them.<br />Order the Clymer manual (at least its the one I like best, but personal opinion).<br /><br />While you have the lower unit off, drain, inspect and re-fill the lower unit.<br /> TRY THIS LINK FOR HELPFUL TIPS <br /><br />And run a compression test. When an engine stalls from being overheated, they are many times reduced to spare parts.
