80-81 Mercury 40hp No Pee

Hey Guys Good Evening. I Have An I Think 80-81 Mercury 40 Engine, Serial# 5897938. This Engine Has Not Been Ran For A Couple Of Years. I Managed To Get The Motor Started The Other Day, It Took A Few Tries But It Ran. I Ran It For About A Few Minutes With The Lower End Submerged In A Tub Of Water. Noticed Some Blue/whitish Smoke Coming Out The Exhaust Ports. Checked The Plugs, The Bottom One Was Covered In Black Oil/gas, Top One Not Too Bad But Black Also.
I Noticed No Water Coming Out Of The Tell Tail Hole. Went To The Boatshop And The Parts Guy Said 90% I Need To Replace The Impeller Pump. I Have No Idea How To Do This, But Im Pretty Sure I Can. Can Anybody Give Me A Step By Step On What Is Involved In This Process? Im Assumming I Should Replace It With The Kit That Includes The Gaskets And Such.
Do I Need To Remove The Prop Or Drain The Fluid In The Lower Unit To Do This? Any Pics Would Be Great...sorry This Post Is So Long But I Want To Get This Boat On The Water Soon...thanks

Like has been said to many others before you, you really need a OEM manual.

I Dont Have The Oem Manual But I Do Have A Clymers, It Doesnt Seems Like It Goes Into Detail With The Pictures Though. Wondering If Anybody Have This Procedure With The Manufacturers Oem Manual With Some Pics Attached, Or If Somebody Has Done This And Took Some Picture Through The Process...

I had same problem once... Found the pee hole full of very dead ants.. Cleaned tube with a wire and out came the stream of water..

You should also check the seal on the top of the impeller housing. I had the same problem on my Johnson and it was the seal. You can buy a kit that I believe includes the seal.

Not to hard. I just put my first one in today. Drop the foot , remove the impellar housing, remove the impellar . Blow and clean all water ways, clean the housing and apply a thin coat of grease on the new one to help it when you first crank it........easy as eatin cheeze cake at a church social.: and dont be jerkin the thing in and out of gear while the foot is off,

well guys this is where im at... got the water pump housing, impeller all the gaskets changed. heres where my problem lies. i cant get the
lower unit back together right. my buddy that was helping me took the cam off of the shift shaft and rotated the shaft. it seems like it has two positions when you turn it. turn it, it clicks, turn it again and it clicks then cant turn it anymore. it does the same thing if you do it backwards. i dont know if this is causing the lower unit to not want to seat right. i dont know if he put the cam in the right position, and if the lower unit maybe got shifted out of nuetral. i can get the lower unit to mate to the top about a 1/4-1/2 inch or so gap in between. when i took everything apart, i had the throttle control lever in nuetral. can you guys gimme some ideas on what to try? my clymers doesnt describe on how to fix this. i need help...

thanks a bunch. how do i know the lower unit is in nuetral? how do i get the lower unit to shift into nuetral? this time im not gonna let my buddy touch a thing...thanks again

Neutral is when the shift shaft is turned to the position you can turn the prop shaft either way without the driveshaft moving

alright...thought i got it all done today..wrong..she peed a nice stream when i fired her up. it would shift into forward and nuetral, but no reverse. can seem to align the shift shafts correctly. whats the trick, forward, reverse or nuetral. im get frustrated with this now. what it is the EASIEST way to assemble this and have use of all my gears? ive worked on a lot of things, but this is getting to me now. help is much appreciated.
