usually a quart. for $10.00 the pump is worth it. if not you have to by the lube in tubes, and squeeze it in.

Changing lower unit oil

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs BRP part # 311598 or Sierra part # 184248, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.

You can put too little in but you can't put too much in, just fill it till it comes out the top hole and you are good.

If you don't want to get a pump get 2 quarts and fill on to the very top, makes it easier to get it full.

ANd get LOWER UNIT OIL not regular 80/90.

You should be using high viscosity gear oil.

Do not overfill the gearcase (beyond the vent plug).

Re: 80 evinrude 70hp lower end unit oil

I purchased a lower unit oil filler pump at Princess Auto. It was something like $7-$8. It makes filling so much less messy. The pump has a threaded adapter with an "O" ring. The plunger part of the pump threads right onto the Canadian Tire bottle. If your lower unit is electric shift OMC manual recommends type "C". The first time I tried filling mine without the pump half the oil ended up on the ground. After running for a minute on the muffs the level had dropped a bit so I topped it through the top hole (air bubbles I guess). The level has been good since.
