i just got a 80hp mercury. I think this a 1980 model year. It came with a boat I recently acquired. The only history I have on it is that it seem to have been sitting for 6-8 years covered outdoors. The motor turns nice and has great compression. It looks very clean. I jumped the starter and it works. but motor did not kick. No fuel coming throught the line so i figure i will pick up a new hose and tank. Plus a manual as soon as possible.

In the mean time. Can you guys give me any reccomendations on what to do with the motor to see if it is a runner. What can i do for maintenance while waiting for my manual.

The boat is a 15 foot Sea Raider bow rider. It has power tilt/trim that is currently not working and needs new floor, transom and interior. I don't mind doing this work if the motor is good.

Re: 80 hp mercury been sitting.

Hi,

I've been working over a 1977 85 HP. I don't know how similiar or dis-similiar they might be; aside from them both being about the same age.

One thing I noticed right off the bat with mine was the condition of the wiring. Many of the wires leading to and from the switch box (a $250.00 box that looks like a simple junction box; but has a lot of electronics in it....) are very brittle and bare. Just touching them causes the insulation to break off. What with the cost of replacing the various electronic goodies on these engines, I sure didn't want to fry anything so I opted to re-wire the engine prior to firing it up. I'm nearing completion on that now.

I'd look yours over carefully if I were you.

Chuck

Seakaye -
Use lots of heat shrink and spray LPS-3 into each join before shrinking.
Eric
