80 merc without power trim

I have a 79 Merc 80 hp without power trim . I want to know where to set the manual trim pin for the best performance of the motor. By tilting the motor closer to the boat does this help the boat plan faster or is it the other way around.

I think the closer to the boat, the faster the plane. Once on plane, tilting out can help top speed. There are several variables to all this thought.

There are general guide lines to follow. How long is you're boat? HydroFins/DoilFins attached to your cativation plate or transom can help performance but can also hinder if size and angles are not correct for your type off boating and speed range. Weight disturbution of people/gas/and batteries can also affect your performance. I would set pin in the 1 to 3 range but depending on your boat size and cargo and average speed range you can experiment to see what best suits your needs.

I thought that putting the pin closer to the boat meant you had TOO MUCH bow plane, ie. most of your passengers/weight was in the rear of the boat. Because putting the pin farther from the transom I would think pushes the rear of the boat down (since the prop is facing upwards) and thus gives you more bow plane.

Am I backwards and if so, explain?!?

No you got it, manual trim huh...my 50 is like that too...how's your back! Heh...
