First of all I want to thank all of you for all the help with my transom and engine problem (firing on one cylinder), couldnt have done it without your help. I went to the water with very high hopes Sunday afternoon, the boat had no leaks, started and ran fine, until I put it in gear, then it would bog and die when I tried to apply throttle. Ran fine at home w/ muffs on while I went through the linkages and timing adjustments. A little history: I have done the following to the engine.
1) replaced power pack 2) replaced all three coils (just to get the best spark I could) 3) replaced impeller and thermostat 4) adjusted all linkages and timing going strictly by the book . 5) checked fuel filter 6) replaced all fuel lines from motor connection all the way to all three lines supplying carbs. All this done before putting in the water. Could my mistake be that I used muffs when setting idle and timing adjustments in stead of putting in a tub? Primer bulb stays hard. also have water exiting out of two about 1/2 inch holes at the rear of engine just below bottom of engine cowling. I think this is an exhaust, not sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. Chuck B.

Howdy, Chuck.

Sounds a lot like it is still not making power with all three cylinders. Have you tried pulling plug wires one at a time to see that each cylinder causes a drop in rpm?

Have you done a compression check?

Keep in mind that a cylinder will not make power for other reasons than no spark. You could have one or two carbs gummed, bad reeds, stuck or broken rings.

Also, keep in mind that even twins can sound fine under no load and fall flat when you ask them to do some work.

Hope this helps. Good luck. :)

Chuck,

The last 3-cyl. OMC I worked on for that problem ended up being repaired by rebuilding the carbs.

This may be really wrong.but, If this motor is a 3 cylinder like mine, i have found that the jet adjustment in the carb's will make a wrold of difference. i recently purchased a 65hp evinrude triumph which to the best of my knowledge is the same as a johnson stinger. i had the same prob as you. Make sure that your low speed jets are not screwed all of the way into your carbs. this will cause the bogging down when you put it in gear. adjust the carbs like the repair manual tells you. good luck
