Re: 800 stringer trim button tilts. and tilt button tilts. so i dont get trim or what
I don't believe there was a Stringer drive in 87. You sure you don't have the Cobra? I believe on the Cobra like the Mercs, you have a trim button that has "Trailer Mode" which lifts the drive above & beyond normal trim only for trailering. I have neither a Cobra or a Merc drive, so maybe someone else can chime in with a better answer.
Just to be clear, a Stringer drive trims the whole motor & drive together. The drive itself never changes position in relation to the motor when trimming. The whole motor itself moves up & down via either a jack screw on the front motor mount or two hydraulic piston motor mounts (on the V8). This is called SelecTrim & was an option early on.
When you tilt a Stringer drive, you're actually pivoting the drive up and away from the intermediate housing while the motor stays stationary. This is accomplished by a large moon-shaped gear (quadrant gear) & clutch mechanism on the port side of the drive. You never should run a Stringer when tilting as you'll chew up & ruin your ball-gears & possibly bearings.
