I have a 1979 80 merc thunder bolt I had to remove the motor to rebuild the transom. Had a guy remove the trottle and choke cables for me . Is it easy to reinstall them and can someone point me in the right direction maybe with some pics as I want to get this back together this weekend and he is not available till sometime next week. attached a pic of the motor

Re: 80hp merc cables

It is real simple. The two cables hook to the motor on the port side of it. You need to remove the wrap cowling. The shift cable pulls and pushes a plastic slider to change the gears. The throttle cable pulls and pushes an arm connected to the carbs.

Move the throttle lever on the control to see which cable moves first from neutral. That is the shift cable. Push it thru the rubber seal into the motor's cowling. The shift slide has a bright aluminum peanut-shaped clamp for the cable. Push it aside to expose the post that holds the cable end. Pull the peanut thing bac over the cable end and tighten the nut with a socket. Stick the barrel nut of the cable into the clamp in the front of the cowling. Now take the throttle cable and put its end over the screw on the throttle arm, and tighten the nut. Put the barrel nut into the clamp and close the clamp. It is a bit tricky the first time, but play around with it and you will get it.
