80hp Thunderbolt Year?

Hi... What a great site! Thanks for all the information!! My apologies for the newbie question... I'm trying to identify the year of my outboard. My Mercury Serial Number is 3144866, but none of the sites I've looked at recognize this number. This is the number under the steering tube and I've also found it on the engine.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

1971 started serial numbers at 2986444
1972 started serial numbers at 3186263

So, I would say it is a 1971
