I have been off the water for 2 years now and need a cheap way to get back on the water. I have found a 80's sunbird thats in BAD shape. Driving up to it it looked decent but the total inside is junk. Its a 16ft and came with a 85 Force that blew 2 years ago and has been in there yard uncovered ever since. The steering has locked up unless there is a way to lock in when they were working on the motor. It was used in salt water and thats where I will be taking it also. I can get another motor a 1990 Nissan 70hp with all the tilt trim and wiring for $600. the boat is listed as $500 OBO was told by the wife I should be able to get it for a couple hundred. My plan would be to replace floor put 2 new seats in it and build a bench seat in the back. I would prob just put plywood in the front unsure but would not put much money into the front bow area since its so small. At this point I have mixed emotions about it.

Nothing wrong with a sunbird, but I would bet the transom is soft too. Start adding things up, and it may be better to find a cared-for boat....

Sunbird and trailer 300
Motor 600
New Steering 200
Plywood and carpet 100
Transom materials 100?
Seats 200 (cheap pedestals)

I am low balling and you are at 1500....

All my project boats get way more expensive than planned :)

yeah that makes it borderline because the boat in good running shape will only be worth $1500. I don't think I would be happy with it either and would only last until I could find something better but would be able to go out on the water until then and should be able to get my money back. Thinking if I can get it for $200 or under it might be ok. I know the people that have it for sale so I could go mess with it to see just how bad the transom and steering is.

with a blown motor, and condition, they should pay you to tow it off. if the trailer is worth the $200, go for it. i buy a lot of boats motor, trailers, to get the motor and trailer, then give the boat away. saves me the dump fee.
